The MommyDaddy research assignment

Commonly in our home the the children will mistakenly refer to one of us as either mommy or daddy then quickly correct themselves and so we now jokingly refer to ourselves jointly as “MommyDaddy”. Rather than perpetuate the heteronormative “his n hers” we feel that mommydaddy works as an acceptable substitute to update you all on the current focus of the adult members of the family.

We have for the last several years reconnected ourselves with our own indigenous roots as the natural first step in de-colonization. The next step for us on this journey is educating ourselves by listening to the indigenous voices currently circulating about the wisdom they have collected within their community.

The Science of the Sacred

Bridging Global Indigenous Medicine Systems and Modern Scientific Principles

This one is written by Nicole Redvers, ND, the first licensed practicing naturopathic doctor in North America who is Dene. In this book we find some compelling science to back up the ideas we’ve had for years about how indigenous medicine can illuminate the true path to wellness in our modern society.

Check it out, we’re adding it to our recommended reading list.

Idioms of Sámi Health and Healing

Patterns of Northern Traditional Healing Series

Edited by Barbara Helen Miller. Someone had a birthday this week and received this jewel as a present. Not only are the circumpolar regions one of the most hard hit with the current situation of climate change they are also being crushed by extractive colonialism. The ways they traditionally deal with healing and their interconnection with the environment are key to how we move forward. We’ll keep you posted on how it lives up to its much anticipated reputation.

Since we’re always on the look out for more “inspiracational” (thank you C) resources, drop us a note in the comments about works you’ve found particularly illuminating.

Commitment

Commit to what calls to you, what feeds you, what lifts you and what frees you. This is the first baby step of many to follow. Each moment stolen away to feed the commitment you made drawing you closer. A commitment is not the beginning for that happened long ago in the swimming of your hearts dreams, your 3 am wanderings and your fears. A commitment is the fulfillment of a promise to yourself that you will make real the stirrings that brought your here. Stay tuned. There is much to do.
